Bach’s motets are amongst the greatest choral masterpieces of all time. This concert intersperses four of these magnificent and expressive works - the double-choir motets Singet den Herrn and Komm Jesu komm, the chorale-motet Jesu meine Freude, and the beautiful but less well known O Jesu Christ meins Lebens Licht - in the context of German motets of the previous and following centuries, by Heinrich Schütz and Johannes Brahms. We also include the five choruses - settings of famous spirituals such as Go down, Moses - from a modern work that recalls the Passions of Bach: Michael Tippett’s oratorio A Child of Our Time.
